If you’re living with a stoma, you might assume that finding swimwear that’s both stylish and functional is a near-impossible task, but, I’m here to tell you otherwise. Turns out, you don’t need specialist companies or designs to find swimwear that works for you. In fact, many mainstream brands are now offering designs that perfectly suit those of us with an ostomy.
I realise the wants and needs of ostomates vary greatly. For some, having their bag on show is not a problem. For others, it’s a step too far out of their comfort zone. The good news is, there are styles to suit every body and preference.
On a recent holiday in Mallorca, I put some bikinis to the test and was pleasantly surprised. From high-waisted bottoms to cleverly ruched fabric and bold patterns, many pieces can discreetly accommodate an ostomy bag without compromising style.
What to look for in swimwear:
- High waisted designs
High-waisted bottoms are a game-changer. Not only are they trendy, but they also offer more coverage around the abdomen, which helps to conceal the ostomy bag and keep it secure. - Ruching
Swimwear with ruched fabric is another great option for us. The folds and texture of the material can distract from any outlines of the bag, providing a flattering look. - Patterns
Bold patterns are your friend! The busier the print, the less likely anyone is to notice what’s going on underneath. Think florals, stripes, or abstract designs—these can really help disguise the bag. - One-pieces & tankinis
If you prefer more coverage, one-pieces or tankinis are another route to go. There are so many modern, beautiful options out there.
My holiday experience
During my trip to Mallorca, I felt more confident than ever in my swimwear. I didn’t have to stick to plain designs or boring colours. Instead, I embraced vibrant prints and flattering cuts that worked for my body, and it felt liberating. My stoma was barely a consideration!
The key takeaway? Don’t limit yourself to “ostomy-friendly” swimwear lines only—mainstream retailers have so much to offer! Take a chance, browse around, and you’ll likely find the perfect swimsuit that makes you feel great.
Final thoughts
It’s all about finding what works for you and experimenting with different styles. So, next time you’re shopping for a swimsuit, don’t hesitate to look at non-specialist retailers. You just might be surprised by what you find!
