I first tumbled down the microplastics rabbit hole after watching a Netflix documentary called The Plastic Detox. It opened my eyes to just how completely surrounded by synthetic materials we are every single day.
Living with long-term conditions means we are already managing systemic inflammation, fatigue, and unpredictable health flares. Whilst we can’t control every toxin in the modern world, what we bring into our home environment is something we can actively play a part in. Reducing our everyday toxic body load gives our immune system less background noise to fight, making it well worth the effort to take a closer look at what surrounds us, in my opinion.
Stanford Medicine highlights how deeply polluted our bodies have become with these tiny fragments of plastic. Researchers have detected microplastics across human tissue, including the:
- Bloodstream and vascular system
- Lungs
- Placenta
- Liver and kidneys
- Gastrointestinal tract and gut lining
It quickly becomes overwhelming when you realise there is no escape. Microplastics are in the soil our food grows in, the soft furnishings we rest on, cleaning product packaging, toothbrushes, non-stick cooking pans, kitchen utensils, and synthetic flooring. It’s even in my ostomy bag, and I obviously can’t be walking around without that!
The negative impact of microplastics on human health
Microplastics are not just passive bits of rubbish floating through us. Once inside, these microscopic particles act as physical irritants and chemical carriers, releasing harmful additives like phthalates and bisphenols directly into our tissues. Studies show that accumulated nanoplastics generate high levels of cellular oxidative stress, trigger programmed cell death, and disrupt hormonal function. Over time, this constant exposure causes tissue damage and chronic low-grade organ damage, putting an unnecessary structural burden on our vital systems.
I’m not sharing this to scare you. Panicking about things outside our control only triggers stress responses and dysregulates our immune systems. But awareness matters. While total elimination is impossible, I’m on a mission to reduce exposure wherever I reasonably can.
The inflammatory connection
My decision to strip plastic out of my home comes down to reducing unnecessary environmental triggers for systemic inflammation.
When microplastics lodge themselves in tissue, our immune system recognises them as foreign invaders. A study on microplastics and inflammation explores how these particles induce oxidative stress, disrupt cell membranes, and trigger persistent immune responses.
For those of us living with chronic conditions, this extra immune burden is the last thing we need! Research in the Journal of Crohn’s and Colitis shows a clear relationship between higher microplastic concentration in the gut and disease activity. Emerging research summarised in the Mount Sinai GI 2026 report, Exploring the Link Between Microplastic Exposure and IBD, suggests that microplastics break down the mucosal barrier in the gut, increasing intestinal permeability and triggering inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) flares. My home and wardrobe overhaul
Replacing everything at once is impossible and financially draining. I started by getting rid of synthetic clothing. ALL of my clothes containing synthetic plastic fibres are gone (giving myself a 5% leeway for items that need to stretch), which initially left me with about 5 items! Replacing a whole wardrobe with natural fibres like organic cotton, linen, and wool is expensive, so it remains a gradual work in progress.
In the house, I focused on high-touch daily items first:
- Kitchen: Replaced plastic chopping boards with solid hardwood, swapped plastic tupperware for glass containers, and replaced plastic mixing bowls.
- Bedding and soft furnishings: Swapped synthetic bedding, blankets, and throws for 100% natural cotton and linen.
- Cleaning: Replaced plastic dish sponges and pan scrubbers with natural plant fibre equivalents.
- Personal care: Replaced shampoo bottles with bars, plastic hairbrushes and combs with wood, antiperspirant spray and roll-on with natural deodorant in a cardboard tube, and have also been shopping around for serums and creams in glass bottles.
- Food and drink: Anything I can find in glass bottles or jars rather than plastic is in, from olive oil to honey and nut butters. If I can find fresh items packaged in cardboard rather than plastic, that’s the decision made. We also added a filter to our tap.
I still have a long list of items to replace as budget allows, but taking it step by step keeps it manageable.
Simple practical steps you can take
You do not need to overhaul your entire life overnight to make a difference. Small, intentional swaps significantly reduce your everyday body load:
- Stop heating food in plastic: Never microwave food in plastic containers or covered in cling film. Heat transfers microplastics directly into your food.
- Ditch plastic chopping boards: Cutting food on plastic boards creates thousands of microplastic particles that stick directly to your ingredients. Switch to solid wood or bamboo.
- Increase dietary fibre intake: An article in Science Focus on clearing microplastics outlines how fibre helps bind to toxins in the digestive tract. Research from Boston University on PFAS and fibre also suggests that fibre supplements and high-fibre foods may assist the body in trapping and excreting polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and plastic particles before they can pass through the gut barrier into the bloodstream.
- Choose natural clothing fibres: When replacing worn-out clothes, opt for cotton, linen, wool, or processed fabrics such as Tencel or viscose over polyester, nylon, and acrylic.
- Filter drinking water: Using a high-quality water filter helps reduce microplastics present in tap water supplies.
Controlling every environmental factor is impossible, but taking charge of the simple things inside your own home is a practical way to support your overall wellbeing. 🌿✨
